Paid Junk Removal
Atlanta Bulk Trash vs
Paid Junk Removal
The City of Atlanta will haul your bulky junk for free — until it won't. It's by appointment, tied to your regular collection day, single-family curbside only, and capped at 12 collections a year. The moment your job is same-day, inside the home, an apartment or condo, commercial, or just too big, you're in paid-junk-removal territory. Here's exactly where that line is.
How the City of Atlanta bulk program actually works
The City of Atlanta's Office of Solid Waste Services runs bulky-item collection — locals call it "bulk trash," "bulky-item pickup," or "large-item collection." It's a genuinely useful program if you fit its box, but that box is narrow. The rules that trip people up:
- By appointment, on your regular day. You schedule it, and pickup happens on your normal residential collection day — not the day you want, and not on demand. If your day is a week out, the item sits at the curb until then.
- Single-family curbside only. You move the item to the curb yourself, and only single-family homes with city residential collection qualify. Apartments and condos are not in the program.
- Capped at 12 collections a year. Go past the annual limit and there's a $343.10 over-limit fee — a number that surprises people mid-renovation or mid-cleanout.
- Not for commercial addresses. Storefronts, offices, and restaurants route to private commercial haulers, not the city bulk program.
Read that list against how Atlanta actually lives. A metro that adds tens of thousands of residents a year, full of Midtown and Downtown towers, Buckhead condos, and Buford Highway garden apartments, is overwhelmingly not single-family-with-curbside-collection. For a big slice of the city, "free bulk pickup" isn't an option at all.
Free vs flat-price: the honest trade-off
This isn't "the city is bad." Free is free, and if you own a single-family home, your item is already at the curb, and you can wait for your scheduled day, the city program is the right call — use it. The trade-off is that "free" costs you time, labor, and flexibility: you do the carrying, you wait for the schedule, and you're capped at 12 a year. Paid junk removal trades a flat price for the opposite — speed, full-service carry-out, and no eligibility rules. Here's the side-by-side:
| City of Atlanta bulk trash | JunkRabbit (paid) | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free (12/yr; $343.10 over-limit) | Flat photo price, from $75; sofa $126 |
| Timing | By appointment, your collection day | Same-day when a slot's open |
| Who carries it | You — to the curb | Our crew — out of the unit |
| Eligible addresses | Single-family homes only | Houses, apartments, condos, commercial |
| Inside-the-home / stairs | No — curbside only | Yes — stairs, walk-ups, freight elevators |
| Multi-item / mixed load | Limited; annual cap | Whole rooms and cleanouts, one trip |
| Tax | — | None — Georgia doesn't tax the service |
Prices are flat and photo-quoted; $75 minimum, disposal included. No Georgia sales tax on the service — the quote is the total.
When the city program simply doesn't qualify — and you need us
- You're in an apartment or condo. Midtown high-rises, Downtown lofts, Buckhead towers, Buford Highway garden apartments — none of them are in the single-family curbside program. We are the option, and we carry it out of the unit.
- It's inside, upstairs, or heavy. The city takes it from the curb; it won't come down your basement stairs for a treadmill or out of a Grant Park bungalow's attic. Our flat price includes the carry.
- You need it gone today. A closing, a move-out, a new sectional arriving — you can't wait for a scheduled collection day. Same-day is our default when a window's open.
- It's a real cleanout. A whole basement, an estate, a BeltLine renovation's worth of debris — that's well past the bulk cap. We price it by truck-fill and clear it in one trip.
- It's commercial. A storefront, office, or restaurant turnover on Buford Highway or in West Midtown isn't eligible for residential bulk pickup at all.
- You've used up your 12. Past the annual limit, the city's $343.10 over-limit fee can make our flat photo price the cheaper and faster choice anyway.
What "paid" gets you in Atlanta
The full-service difference is the whole point. A curbside program — city or otherwise — assumes the item is already at the curb. We start where that assumption breaks: our vetted, insured crew carries it out of the unit, files the Certificate of Insurance a Midtown or Buckhead building requires and books the freight elevator, splits a sectional to clear a doorway, and comes up the basement stairs in a Sandy Springs or Marietta split-level. Everything usable is routed to donation — the Furniture Bank of Metro Atlanta, Goodwill of North Georgia, and Habitat for Humanity ReStore partners take gently-used furniture — and disposal is folded into the flat price. Because metro tipping fees are low here, we can price honestly rather than padding around a dump fee, and because Georgia doesn't tax the service, the quote you see is the total.
What Atlanta customers say
"I tried to schedule city bulk pickup for a condo in Midtown and learned condos don't qualify. JunkRabbit gave me a flat price from a photo and had the sofa out the freight elevator the next morning. No tax, no runaround."
"We'd already used our city pickups for the year during a reno. Rather than pay the over-limit fee and wait, we booked a half-truck flat rate and they cleared the whole basement same day."
"Cerramos una tienda en Buford Highway y el programa de la ciudad no aplica a negocios. Precio fijo desde una foto, el mismo día, sin impuestos. Muy claro."
Bulk trash vs paid junk removal — quick answers
Does the City of Atlanta pick up bulk trash for free?
Yes, but only by appointment on your regular collection day, curbside, single-family homes only, capped at 12 collections a year with a $343.10 over-limit fee. Apartments, condos, and commercial addresses aren't included.
Why pay if the city does it free?
Because the free program can't do same-day, can't come inside the home, can't serve apartments/condos or commercial, and caps your volume. Paid junk removal gives you a flat photo price, a same-day window, and a crew that carries it out.
How much is paid junk removal in Atlanta?
Flat and photo-quoted — sofa $126, queen mattress $103, refrigerator $164, $75 minimum; cleanouts by truck-fill from $241 (1/4) to $732 (full). Disposal included, no Georgia sales tax on the service.
Do apartments and condos qualify for city bulk pickup?
No — the program is single-family curbside only. Renters in Midtown, Downtown, Buckhead, and the Buford Highway corridor need on-demand junk removal instead.
