Who actually picks up old appliances in Atlanta

The short answer

In Atlanta you have six realistic options for an old appliance:

• The retailer delivering the replacement
• The contractor installing the replacement
• A scrap metal collector
• Your county or city bulk-item program
• A utility appliance program, if one is currently running
• A junk removal crew

The first two are the cheapest and the most conditional. The next three are free but limited and slow. The last one costs money and works every time: a standard refrigerator is $164, a washer $133, a dryer $128, carried out from wherever it is with disposal included.

1. The retailer, on delivery day only

If you are buying a replacement, this is the best deal available and often free. It is also the narrowest window in the list.

The conditions are consistent across the big retailers: it is delivery-day only, it is normally one-for-one, the old unit has to be disconnected, emptied and defrosted before they arrive, and many delivery teams will not take an appliance up or down stairs.

That last condition is the one that bites in this metro. Laundry in the basement is standard in Decatur bungalows, Chamblee split-foyers and Brookhaven ranches, and a delivery driver who will not do stairs leaves the old washer exactly where it was.

If you already took delivery, the window has closed. If you have two fridges and bought one, they take one.

2. The contractor doing the work

A plumber replacing a water heater, or an HVAC company swapping an outdoor condenser, will usually haul the old unit as part of the job. Ask before you sign, because some price it as an extra and some just do it.

This only covers the unit they touched. The HVAC crew replacing your system is not taking the chest freezer out of the basement garage on their way.

3. Scrap metal collectors

Metal appliances have scrap value, and around the metro there are people who will take them. Free, sometimes same day.

Two real limitations. They want metal, so they take the dryer and leave the plastic dishwasher, the door you removed and the packaging. And they are curbside operations — nobody is going down into a Sandy Springs daylight basement for a freezer.

For refrigerant-bearing units there is a further problem. Fridges, freezers, window AC units and heat pumps have to have refrigerant recovered by someone certified before the shell is scrapped. A unit gutted for copper in your driveway is not that, and the leftovers are yours.

4. County and city bulk programs

There is no one Atlanta program. The City of Atlanta runs its own arrangements; unincorporated DeKalb and Fulton run theirs; Cobb, Gwinnett and Clayton are separate again; and the individual cities — Decatur, Brookhaven, Dunwoody, Sandy Springs, Chamblee, Smyrna, Tucker — each set their own. If you live in an unincorporated pocket served by a private hauler, the rules come from your contract.

What they have in common: they are curbside, they usually need scheduling, they have limits on how many items and how often, and appliances with refrigerant are frequently handled separately or excluded. Check your own jurisdiction's current bulk-pickup page — it is the only reliable source, and it changes.

Realistically this is a three-week option for an item you have to get to the street yourself.

5. Utility programs

Energy utilities in various parts of the country periodically run appliance recycling or rebate programs — typically for working second refrigerators and freezers, sometimes with a small payment. Whether one is running in your service territory at any given moment changes.

Worth two minutes on your utility's website if you have a working garage fridge you want gone. Not worth planning around, and it will not help with a dead washer.

6. Junk removal, and what it costs

The difference from every other option on this list is that the crew comes to the appliance. Basement, carport, second-floor laundry, under-house garage — the price is the same. There is no stair charge and no refrigerant surcharge; recovery and correct disposal are inside the number.

Combinations just add: washer $133 + dryer $128 = $261. A whole kitchen: refrigerator $164 + electric range $134 + dishwasher $109 = $407.

How to choose in about ten seconds

• Buying a replacement and it is on the ground floor? Take the retailer haul-away.
• A contractor is already replacing it? Ask them to take it.
• Clean metal, sitting outside, no refrigerant, no deadline? A scrapper will take it free.
• It is inside, or downstairs, or has refrigerant, or you need it gone this week? Pay the flat price.

One Atlanta-specific warning

Do not park an appliance in the carport or on the back patio while you decide. This climate is hard on metal — humid summers, heavy afternoon storms, and enough mild wet months that nothing ever fully dries out. A washer left under a carport in East Point or Smyrna for two years is rusted through at the base and seized at the drum, and it is now considerably harder to move than it was.

And if the plan is to leave it at the street for a scheduled pickup, check the date first. Through pollen season it will be yellow within a day, and through storm season it will be standing in water.
